“ Briliante, Reflection Workshop Series Gertrude Stein” FREEHOUSE

For this project I worked with Freehouse, a project of Jeanne van Heeswijk. Together with Pieternel de Winter a projectmember of Freehouse, we read Stein’s poems with a multiethnic group of women who voluntarily work at ‘Brillante’ as part of receiving their benefits. Through the readings the women were able to relate the themes of the poems to their own lives.

Voor dit project heb ik/hebben wij gewerkt met Freehouse, een project van Jeanne van Heeswijk. Samen met Pieternel de Winter, een projectmedewerker van Freehouse, heb ik/hebben wij Stein’s gedichten gelezen met een multi-etnische groep vrouwen. Deze groep vrouwen verrichten vrijwilligerswerk bij ‘Brillante’ als onderdeel van hun uitkering. Door het lezen van de gedichten konden de vrouwen de thema’s van de gedichten verbinden met hun eigen levens.

Reflectie Workshop Serie Gertrude Stein
Brillante is een door wijkbewoners gerunde tweede kans modewinkel. De Griekse kunstenaar Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki organiseerde er vier workshops rondom het werk van de Amerikaanse schrijfster Gertrude Stein. Eind april bespreekt ze met de deelneemsters de betekenis van taal voor de deelname aan sociaal en economisch verkeer.
Brillante is a second-chance fashion boutique run by local residents. Greek artist Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki has organized four workshops here about the work of American writer Gertrude Stein. In late April, she will talk with participants about the significance of language to social and economic participation.
Social Harbor
Freehouse would prefer to organize Rotterdam South as a Social Harbor. Traditionally harbors not only serve as gates between the city and the world, they are also dynamic places in which there are always plenty of social, cultural, and economic developments going on. They generate movement of people, ideas, and goods and are nodes of migration flows. Harbors stimulate innovation and create employment. This in turn attracts new people, which means that harbors play an important role in the development and positioning of the city, the region, and the country.
At the request of the IABR and in collaboration with the Afrikaanderwijk Cooperative, Freehouse has brought these ideas together in Social Harbor, an activity and intervention program that will take place during IABR–2016 in the Afrikaanderwijk in Rotterdam.
